This untitled 1965 work by Shozo Shimamoto is a prime example of the Gutai movement, a Japanese avant-garde art group active in the 1950s and 1960s. Gutai artists sought to express the physicality of the act of painting, rejecting traditional art forms and techniques. In this piece, Shimamoto uses a dynamic, layered approach, incorporating color and texture to create a powerful, organic form, reminiscent of a natural landscape.
