Nancy Andrews made this photograph, Yvette's Family, no. 2, on a sheet of paper measuring roughly 16 by 20 inches. I love how the black and white makes it feel like a memory, a moment snatched out of time. I imagine Nancy Andrews, camera in hand, watching this embrace, waiting for the perfect moment to capture that pure, unadulterated joy. What was it like to be in that room with them? How much did she consider the composition? How did she pose them? Or did she capture a spontaneous embrace? Did she take lots of photos or just a few? I'm guessing that Andrews loves photography like I love painting. Andrews is part of a long conversation among artists, across time, each inspiring the other’s creativity. It's about embracing the ambiguities and uncertainties, allowing for multiple interpretations. This photograph captures so much with its greyscale tones and I can't help but feel warmed by the love that seems to come off of the paper.
