Kazuo Nakamura made "Blue Reflections" with paint and a lot of patience. Look at the tiny marks, all those little dashes. Nakamura was clearly into process. Up close you see how the color is layered, and it’s all about the surface, not about hiding it. The paint is thin, so you can see how one layer interacts with the next. Your eye dances across the surface, connecting all those little lines. The rhythm of those blue strokes, one after the other, reminds me of Agnes Martin and her quiet grids. Each mark seems both random and deliberate. I feel like I could lose myself in there, swimming in all the blue, and wonder what's reflected back?
