Niels Larsen Stevns made this drawing, a sketch for "Christ Healing a Leper," with graphite on paper. The rawness of the sketch really gets me. You can almost feel Stevns figuring things out, the way he uses line to suggest form without fully committing to it. There's a beautiful sense of incompleteness, where the viewer's imagination gets to fill in the blanks. Look at how the figures emerge from the ground through these tentative, searching lines. It reminds me that art is really just a process. I’m thinking of other artists who worked in series, like Monet, to see a subject from every angle. It’s cool how artists talk to each other across time. Stevns' sketch shows us that art embraces questions, not just answers.
