Luc-Olivier Merson painted La Danse, an image brimming with symbolic gestures and iconography of classical antiquity. Here we see a woman draped in classical robes and an angel striking a tambourine: images of festivity, pleasure and celebration. These motifs are not new. The tambourine, for example, has been used since antiquity and continues into modernity as a device of revelry, often found in depictions of Bacchic festivals. We see the figure of the angel, which originates in ancient Greece as Eros or Cupid, transmuted here into a symbol of Christian salvation. But these figures—of dance, of love—are not simply cheerful emblems; they are powerful forces engaging us on a deep, subconscious level, triggering the collective memories of ecstasy, love, and joy. Notice how these symbols constantly resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings. They demonstrate a non-linear progression across time, engaging our cultural memory.
