Street and Houses, Mexico
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Editor: This watercolor, "Street and Houses, Mexico" by Dodge Macknight, captures a quiet village scene. The warm tones are really inviting, but the buildings also seem a little…worn. What do you make of this, especially the use of color? Curator: Macknight's intuitive brushstrokes evoke a sense of place, don’t they? I see Mexico through his eyes, a place bathed in sunlight where the buildings seem to breathe with the landscape. The color choices? They feel like a love letter to the architecture, perhaps even an attempt to freeze a fleeting memory. What feelings stir within you as you gaze upon it? Editor: Definitely a sense of stillness, but also warmth. It makes me want to travel. I hadn't thought about the colors as a love letter! Curator: Art can be like that, a whisper from the artist's soul. Makes you wonder what stories these walls could tell, doesn’t it? Editor: Absolutely. I'll be looking at watercolors in a whole new way now.
