Here's a quick sketch of Thorvaldsen after Eckersberg's painting, created by Niels Larsen Stevns. It's all done with these thin, scribbly lines, a real study in mark-making. You can almost feel the artist's hand moving across the page, figuring out the contours of the face, the flow of the hair. I imagine Stevns deeply engaged, trying to capture not just the likeness, but something of the spirit of the original painting. Maybe he's thinking about Eckersberg, about Thorvaldsen, about the whole history of art. You know, how one artist builds upon another, reinterpreting and reimagining what came before. It reminds me of my own process, how I often start with something familiar, a photograph or another painting, and then let the act of painting take over, transforming it into something new. It's like a conversation across time, each artist adding their voice to the mix.
