Curator: Grace Cossington Smith's "Extravaganza", created in 1921 using oil paint, greets us. What springs to mind when you see this painting? Editor: Well, immediately I get a sense of spectacle. There's an energy, a bustling sense of anticipation. It feels like the curtain is about to rise on a very important moment, with its large format it makes one wonder where she encountered or envisioned this scene. Curator: Yes, and I find it interesting to consider how Cossington Smith, part of the early 20th century modernism, depicts theatricality and social gatherings in Australia. What materials might have been accessible to her in 1921 that shaped her artistic process? Did the canvas itself have to be specially treated or could she readily obtain it? Also, I wonder if these performers represent the working class, maybe the artist reflecting her place among this artistic moment? Editor: I see what you mean. Though, my gaze keeps getting drawn back to the reflections of the pillars on the ground. Those shimmering details! The whole thing almost vibrates. Did Cossington Smith purposefully set out to represent a grand vision? Curator: We know that in this period Australian society was experiencing significant change following World War One, influencing artists to look more towards internal experience, such as the choice of figures dancing, a social element of gathering but also of freedom and celebration of body. We need to reflect on art education. Who were her influences and contemporaries that were actively pushing modernism within art practices? And her choice of this moment within performance, how does it speak to consumerism during this period of new wealth distribution. Editor: Hmm, interesting point... For me though, "Extravaganza" captures this unique experience, perhaps only existing momentarily. A bit like catching the echo of a memory. Curator: Absolutely, and the interplay of oil paint itself is another crucial factor. Her choice reveals more of not only where her artistic direction stems from but also speaks to how this painting interacts with economic trends of the time. Editor: So, where you focus more on her materials and social conditions, I love how this picture transports me; it is really one of the defining attributes for me.
