Editor: Here we have a Denarius of Septimius Severus from the Harvard Art Museums. The coin is worn with age, but I’m still struck by the detail. What elements of its design stand out to you? Curator: Consider the circular form, how it confines and focuses the imagery. The deliberate act of engraving, line by line, to capture the likeness of Severus. Note the intentionality in the arrangement of text around the central figure. Editor: It's interesting how the artist worked within the shape to convey power. Thank you for pointing that out. Curator: Indeed. The medium itself speaks to authority and control, doesn't it?
