Luca Ciamberlano created this print, "Devils Disturbing Filippo Neri During Prayer," sometime in the early 17th century using the intaglio process. With intaglio, the image is incised into a metal plate, likely copper. The lines are then filled with ink, and the surface is wiped clean. High pressure forces the paper into the inked lines, transferring the image. Look closely, and you’ll see the characteristic crisp lines and slightly raised surface of the print. The technique demands a high degree of skill, requiring years of apprenticeship to master. This print, part of a series illustrating the life of Filippo Neri, highlights the growing market for devotional images. Printed in multiples, these images were more accessible than unique paintings, serving a wide audience and reflecting the democratization of religious imagery. The labor-intensive nature of printmaking contrasts with its aim: broad distribution.
