Editor: Here we have Kassian Céphas’s “Rechtszaak bij de assistent-resident,” a gelatin silver print from between 1886 and 1887. The composition and the contrast makes it appear like a stage where two different communities interact. What underlying tensions do you see represented in this piece? Curator: This photograph, taken in the Dutch East Indies, is rife with power dynamics. Note how the European colonizers are seated at the table, elevated both literally and figuratively. This visual hierarchy reflects the real social and political hierarchies of the time. What do you observe about the people seated on the ground? Editor: They appear to be the subjects of this… trial, maybe? There’s a palpable sense of vulnerability and subjugation. Curator: Precisely. Their positioning on the ground, in contrast to the seated colonizers, reinforces their lack of power and agency. It's a deliberate staging of colonial authority, reflecting orientalist tropes of the period. What do you think the photographer, Céphas, is trying to say by documenting this scene? Editor: Perhaps he is attempting to document the realities of colonial injustice? Or is it merely a detached observation? I find it difficult to know his intentions. Curator: It is hard to ascertain intent, however by presenting us with this visual record, Cephas compels us to confront the complex legacy of colonialism and consider the experiences of those marginalized within its structures. This is not simply a record but a call to dialogue and engagement. Editor: It’s certainly prompted a new way of seeing this photograph. Thanks for untangling those complex layers. Curator: Indeed. And it shows us how deeply rooted colonial power was, not only politically, but also in the everyday visual representations of that time.
