A. de Winter made this abstract composition out of wood, it looks like they used chisels and gouges to dig in and remove material from the surface. I can almost feel the give of the wood under the blade, how one cut defines the next. I wonder what they were thinking as they worked. Each mark is so deliberate, yet the overall effect is so fluid. Do you think the artist saw their own gestures reflected back in the material? The texture is incredible, running in so many directions. Notice how the gouges catch the light, creating this play of dark and light that defines the forms. I love the way that each cut informs the next. Artists are always teaching each other, like notes passed in class, across time and space. It is an ongoing conversation, where ideas are constantly re-interpreted and re-imagined. What can you bring to the conversation?
