Nicolaas Verkolje painted the "Rape of Europa" on canvas. Europa, adorned with flowers, approaches a gentle bull, unaware of its divine guise. The bull, an ancient symbol of virility and power, here veils Zeus's intentions. This scene, echoing through centuries, recalls similar transformations and abductions in myth – a visual language of desire and dominance. The bull-god motif appears in Minoan Crete, worshipped as a symbol of fertility and strength; in the ancient Near East, where bull imagery was associated with kingship and divine authority. Observe how the cherubic figures, seemingly innocent, participate in this deception. Their presence underscores a timeless game of seduction, where innocence and artifice intertwine. The composition evokes a deep-seated recognition of power dynamics, engaging our subconscious with its blend of beauty and latent threat. Thus, the image resonates beyond its immediate narrative, evoking a complex interplay of attraction, desire, and the perennial dance between mortals and gods.

Zeus, the king of the gods, has disguised himself as a bull in order to seduce the chaste maiden Europa. To their right Cupid stands ready to shoot his arrows of love. In depicting this story from the Metamorphoses, the famous book by the Roman poet Ovid, Verkolje demonstrates his knowledge of Classical literature. Moreover, he proves his artistic virtuosity by means of the complex composition with numerous figures.
