Edwin Fulwider made this lithograph, Glacial Boundary, and it's such an atmospheric piece. I imagine him carefully grinding the lithographic stone, preparing it for the image. The act of drawing must have been a slow, deliberate process, building up the tones with layers of marks. I wonder what Fulwider was thinking as he created this image, and the title suggests a landscape shaped by immense, natural forces. You know, lithography is so different from painting but the way the light shimmers through the dark grays almost makes it painterly. Look at the way he’s captured the drama of the sky and the way it looms over the scene. There's something so compelling about the way he's rendered the texture of the fields too. For me, artists are always in conversation. Fulwider’s work reminds me of other printmakers who have captured the American landscape with such a sensitivity to light and shadow, and just like them, he’s inviting us to contemplate the relationship between humanity and nature.
