This letter to Anna Dorothea Dirks was penned by Jonkheer Jan Six, in ink, on paper. It's all about the gesture, the way the ink flows and pools, isn’t it? I find myself tracing the loops and swirls of the handwriting, like following the curves of a vine. Look at how the pressure varies, thick to thin, in a constant rhythm. It’s almost sculptural, the way the words rise up from the page. The ink, once liquid, now sits there, solid, a record of a fleeting moment. It makes me think of Cy Twombly, who had such a similar way of filling the page with such playful scribbles. The beauty of art, like a letter, is that it’s never really finished, it’s always open to interpretation. A letter can mean many things to different people, and it can change meanings over time, with different readings. Like a painting, it's a conversation, an exchange of ideas, across time.
