This piece, made with thread and cotton by a Belgian internee in Amersfoort, looks like a fragment of a collar in progress. It's all about process, right? Like a drawing in thread. The light cotton ground is pinned, with a delicate, creamy thread building up a floral design. The thread, a single, continuous line, creates shape and form in a way that's both precise and improvisational. Look at the upper section, the fleur-de-lis. See how the stitch work creates a sense of depth, a shimmering texture? It makes me think of artists like Ree Morton, who took humble materials and process and transformed them into something quite beautiful. Art's about embracing the unexpected, finding beauty in the incomplete, and seeing the potential in every little thing.
