This etching of a church was created by Evert Larock, a master of the needle, in the late 19th century. Observe the church tower, its spire reaching skyward, crowned with what seems to be a cross – a potent symbol in Western culture. Throughout history, the cross has morphed from a symbol of suffering to one of triumph and salvation. We find it replicated on battle standards during the Crusades, adorning reliquaries, and even subtly worked into the architecture of cathedrals. In our collective memory, the image of a church elicits a sense of community, of refuge. Larock, through his somber depiction, seems to tap into this archetypal emotion, inviting us to consider the church as more than just a building.
