Curatorial notes

Johannes Frederik Engelbert ten Klooster made this drawing of the Veere neighborhood with ink on paper. It’s like a quick sketch, a moment caught, all in these confident lines. I love how the ink defines everything, even the light. Look at the little dog sitting by the building. The marks are so descriptive you just know what kind of dog it is. The artist isn't afraid to leave spaces open, like the suggestion of foliage, all scratchy and free. There is an openness that invites you to imagine the scene yourself. The power of a simple line, you know? It makes me think of other artists who use line in their work. It reminds me of Picasso’s etchings, but more folksy. It’s about seeing and making, keeping the conversation going.
