This 'Untitled' artwork by David Smith, origin unknown, it's made using ink on paper. I love the immediacy of ink; those bold, confident strokes tell a story of process. See how the ink pools in some areas and thins out in others? It's like Smith is wrestling with the medium, letting it drip and drag, and even splatter a bit. There's a real physicality to the work. The blacks are so intense against the bare paper, it feels like a conversation. Look at how the lines intersect and overlap, creating these little pockets of space. That circular shape down in the lower left corner feels like a fulcrum, grounding all that chaotic energy. It reminds me of Pollock in some ways, but with a more sculptural sensibility. Maybe because Smith was a sculptor. It's not so much about the overall composition as it is about the individual marks and gestures. It invites us to witness Smith's thought process in real time. Art is an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, and this piece is a great example of that.
