Cyprián Majerník’s ‘Villa in the Garden’ is a painting in which dabs of cool greens, pale blues, and creamy whites come together to depict a villa in the garden. I can imagine Majerník outside on a breezy day, rapidly capturing the scene with his brushstrokes. He paints the trunks and branches of the trees framing the building with such directness, so economical - they seem to dance on the canvas. The way he’s built up the layers of paint, especially in the sky, gives a sense of depth and atmosphere. Look at how the greens of the garden bleed into the building, connecting them. I wonder if Majerník was thinking about the relationship between nature and architecture? Or maybe, like many artists, he was simply captivated by the play of light and shadow on this particular day. The way the paint is applied so freely, makes me think of other painters like Bonnard, who tried to capture the fleeting moments of life in paint. Artists are always looking, learning and influencing each other, across time and space. I feel like a painting like this is less about capturing a specific scene, and more about the feeling of being there. Majerník's painting remains open, allowing us to bring our own experiences and interpretations.
