Joseph Wright of Derby made Dovedale by Moonlight, using oil paint on canvas. The artist’s technique really influenced the appearance of this landscape, which looks at first glance like a realist scene, but it’s actually a composite of studies. Wright carefully built up the image in layers, achieving a depth of field through tonal variation. Note the use of chiaroscuro, which gives the painting a sense of drama. The artist spent time scrutinizing textures and effects, to then achieve this almost photographic level of detail. The painting is, in a way, a product of its time – a reflection of the industrial revolution that was taking hold in England, and Wright’s own fascination with the emerging world of science and technology. Wright brought his detailed process of observation to this painting, imbuing this work with cultural significance, elevating landscape painting to something worthy of close study, like science. Wright's innovative approach challenges the traditional hierarchy between craft and fine art.
