This Woven Textile was made by Byron Dingman, who was born way back in 1855. The textile is a sea of pink and off-white, and the soft floral patterns create a kind of rhythm that is pleasing and calm. I wonder what Dingman was thinking when he made this textile. It's interesting to consider the back and forth of the weaving process itself. It's almost like a conversation, isn’t it? The artist makes a move, and the material responds; the artist adjusts, and the textile answers back again. There is a clear intention to create something visually appealing, but you get the feeling that the artist’s own pleasure in the materials and process are just as important as the end result. It is exciting to think about how one artist inspires the next. Looking at this textile, I feel like I want to get back into the studio. It's amazing how making a piece that really sings can create such resonance.
