Georges Rouault made this print, Trio, with ink and color. I love the way Rouault lays down these heavy black outlines that really make the colors pop. It's like stained glass, but with a rougher, more human touch. The faces are so simple, almost cartoonish, but they're also really expressive. Look at the way he uses color, pink and orange for the skin, and then these cool greens and blues in the background. It's not realistic at all, but it feels so right. And those big, dark eyes – they just stare right through you. There's a real sense of depth and emotion in this piece. It reminds me a little bit of some of the German Expressionists, like Kirchner or Heckel, but Rouault has his own thing going on. It's like he's showing us the world through a cracked mirror, and it's both beautiful and a little bit scary.
