Edward Renouf made this untitled work with graphite, or a similar material, on paper. It’s a blizzard of marks. Looking at it, I’m thinking about the act of drawing as a process, a kind of meditation. See how the marks build up, layer upon layer? There’s a real physicality to it. It makes me think of Agnes Martin, but if she’d taken a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in a forest. If you look closely at the bottom left, there’s an area where the marks are denser. It’s almost like a focal point, a place where the energy of the whole image seems to concentrate. The texture feels almost like fabric there. It’s a beautiful, ambiguous piece. Like a whisper of something you can’t quite grasp. What does it remind *you* of?
