This landscape by Wilh. Zenker is printed on the page of a book. It's small but evokes a grand space. It feels like a kind of experiment in seeing – a mood achieved with a limited tonal range. There are delicate washes of light that seem to glow on the page, and some darker passages in the trees, which might suggest what Zenker was thinking about – how to turn light into a solid thing? I imagine the artist, head down, squinting at the subject. What was it like for Zenker, as it is for all artists, to see something that no one else had? Maybe he felt a bit like he was wrestling with a ghost – chasing down an image only to find it slipping away. This piece has a lot in common with others made by artists of the time, who shared and exchanged ideas and approaches. It inspires me to consider the artist's hand and mind, and the conversations that occur across time.
