Frederick Shirley crafted this Sicilian glass lamp; its surface is etched with symbols that ripple through time. Look closely at the glass shade. See the delicate etchings? Images of butterflies and an X motif, both ancient symbols appearing in early funerary art across the globe. The butterfly, representing the soul's metamorphosis, flutters across cultures from ancient Greece to modern-day Japan, each culture imbuing it with unique spiritual significance. The X mark, suggestive of a cross, has its origins in ancient alphabets as well as Christian and other religious symbolism representing concepts as diverse as boundaries, crossing over, and protection. These symbols, rendered here in a domestic lamp, reveal how deeply ingrained these ancient yearnings for rebirth and continuity are within the human psyche. They resonate as echoes in our collective memory. Symbols resurface in new forms, forever transformed yet eternally linked to the emotions of our ancestors.
