Cornelis Vreedenburgh made this drawing of cars on a street perhaps as a study, a kind of thinking through making, with graphite on paper. Look at the marks! So many short, hatched lines building up form, volume, space. The paper shines through, creating a shimmering effect. He’s not trying to trick you into thinking this IS a street; instead, it's a record of the artist’s engagement with the street. It reminds me of Giacometti’s drawings, where the subject seems to emerge from a cloud of graphite. See that dark patch on the left, like a shadow or a tree? It’s just a bunch of scribbles, but somehow, they suggest depth and texture. The cars themselves are barely defined, more like ghostly suggestions than solid objects. It’s all about the process, the act of looking and responding. The looseness, the ambiguity – that's where the magic happens.
