G. Hidderley made this small black and white photograph called, Man in Volendamse klederdracht staand in een zeilschip met een stok in de hand. The image has a gentle, soft feel with a subdued palette. It seems to have come into being slowly. I wonder, did Hidderley consider what he was doing art, or simply documenting life? What was it like to be there amongst the boats, the rigging, and the water? The artist has managed to capture something about a time and place. The diagonal line that travels across the frame tells us something about the activity of the man. Look how the artist’s decisions draw our eye and shape our experience of the photograph. I love how artists from different times are always in conversation with one another, inspiring us with their creativity. Painting, photography, all these forms embrace ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations.
