This watercolor of a bird with grey tail feathers, a black head with a red spot was made by Nicolaas Struyk. This image reflects the growth of natural science during the Dutch Golden Age. But, It isn't just a simple record; the positioning of the bird, the light, and the detail all speak to the status of the natural world, the trade in exotic goods, and the very role of institutions in the shaping of cultural knowledge in 18th-century Netherlands. The Dutch East India Company was at its peak during Struyk's time, and with it came an increased interest in the natural world. These types of images, which often appeared in scientific books, can also be seen as status symbols for the well-to-do. These images, and the trade that brought new species of flora and fauna to Europe, would have had a significant impact on the world of art. When we analyze this and other artworks, we must consider the available research resources to create a meaningful interpretation. In this instance, knowledge of Dutch trade, the scientific revolution, and the role of the artist as part of these cultural movements will help us contextualize the artwork.
