Johannes Tavenraat sketched this farm with field using pen in gray in the 19th century. At its heart lies the farmhouse. The farmhouse transcends its mere function as a dwelling; it becomes a symbol of stability and continuity. One might think of the ancient Roman household gods, the Lares and Penates, whose shrines were central to domestic life, ensuring the well-being and prosperity of the family. Even today, the farmhouse retains its primal connection to the land, evoking a sense of home. The farmhouse, with its chimney smoking, suggests not just shelter but also the warmth of hearth and home. Yet, like Janus, the Roman god of doorways, the farmhouse is caught in a perpetual cycle, of tradition and change. The image reminds us that even in the humblest of subjects, echoes of history and the human psyche resonate deeply.
