This anonymous design for a stained glass window features two birds and various ornaments. I wonder what it was like to draw out the initial design. I imagine the artist thinking about light, color, and texture as they penciled and inked the image, how each of the little panes of glass would catch the sunlight and project color into the room. The birds are perched, ready to take flight. Their careful design reminds me of illuminated manuscripts or tapestries, where the natural world is translated into something intricate and stylized. The artist probably studied other windows, learning how to balance detail with the overall structure, like Matisse studying Bonnard or the other way around. There's an ongoing dialogue, a conversation between artists across time. Painting is like that, too. You're never really alone; you’re always in conversation with those who came before, riffing off their ideas, adding your own voice to the mix. There's a freedom in knowing you’re part of something bigger.
