"The Ghost", by M.C. Escher, is a small wood engraving. The striking contrast of black and white gives the image its immediate impact, a bold statement made through careful carving. The texture here is all about the line. Look at how Escher uses varied strokes to define form and create depth. Notice the ghost's body. See how lines carve into and around it, suggesting musculature. And then, the landscape, a forest of upright strokes, each one distinct, like individual blades of grass, yet also contributing to the overall scene. The dark areas surrounding the ghost are like thickets, each filled with tiny, almost obsessive marks. What does it all mean? Well, that's the fun part. Maybe the ghost is an allegory for our inner selves, always present, yet often unseen, like a drawing by Alfred Kubin, full of darkness and mystery. Art doesn't have to spell everything out. It’s a conversation, an invitation to see, to think, and to feel.
