Adrift 

Sarah Joncas’s ‘Adrift’ presents us with a portrait rich in subtle, dreamlike symbolism. The woman's gaze holds a certain melancholic depth, drawing us into her internal world. But it is the earrings that truly capture our attention. In the form of a pyramid, this shape has appeared throughout history in myriad contexts and cultures, as a symbol of power, ambition, and ascension, from ancient Egyptian monuments to corporate logos. These earrings, however, are delicate and feminine, a subversion of the pyramid's traditional associations. They speak to a powerful, yet subtle, transformation. Like a palimpsest, images are continually layered, revised, and recontextualized; this painting invites us to consider the symbols that permeate our collective unconscious.
