This etching depicts the Doopsgezinde Singelkerk in Amsterdam, an Anabaptist church, and was made by an anonymous artist. The building's architecture with its rhythmic windows invites us to consider the deeper meanings embedded within its structure. The emphasis on light filtering through the windows might be associated with divine revelation or spiritual awakening, reflecting the Anabaptist ideals of inner faith and direct relationship with God. Note how these windows, repeated rhythmically, bear a resemblance to the colonnades found in classical temples. Think, for example, of the Temple of Jerusalem. These temples, too, were designed to draw the eye upwards, into the heavens. Such visual echoes remind us that human spirituality evolves, not in a linear fashion, but in a cyclical dance. Architectural motifs recur, carrying collective memories of past sacred spaces. We may see the human desire to connect with the divine through soaring structures, no matter the era, or the specific belief system.
