This drawing called "Studie" was made by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, and it looks like he was working out an idea with a pencil on paper. I love seeing these kinds of process-oriented works. You can see the pentagonal structure, not quite centered, but held in place by some quick, light lines around it. There's something so intimate about seeing how an artist thinks through a problem, like overhearing a conversation with themselves. The quality of the line is so delicate, like he's just barely touching the paper. Look closely, and you can see the ghost of erased lines, the evidence of his searching. This piece reminds me of the early sketches of Sol LeWitt. Like LeWitt, Cachet shows us that the real art is in the idea, the system, not necessarily in the finished product. It's not about perfection but about the journey of making.
