"The pursuit of happiness" is a black and white drawing by Fritz Boehle, a German artist who was born in 1873. This piece is housed in the Städel Museum and depicts a man running away from a woman. The man is nude, save for a cloth draped over his lower body and a crown of thorns. The woman, also nude, holds out a chalice toward the running man, perhaps symbolizing the pursuit of happiness through spiritual or material fulfillment. The dense, thorny background adds a sense of struggle and difficulty to the scene.
