This ‘Untitled’ print by James McGarrell looks like it was made in a hurry, but maybe it wasn’t? The way the colours and forms bleed into each other makes me think about process, and how artmaking is like a conversation with yourself. The print is mostly greens and whites, with some coppery browns and purples peeking through. I love the way McGarrell uses these colours to create a sense of depth and space, even though the image is mostly flat. Look closely, and you can see the texture of the paper, and how the ink has been pressed into it, like a memory. The figure seems to be sitting on a bench, maybe in a park or garden, lost in thought. The more I look at this print, the more I see how McGarrell is playing with the idea of representation. It makes me think of other artists like Elizabeth Murray, who also like to play with form and colour in their work. This piece is a good example of how art can be both beautiful and thought-provoking, and how there's always more to discover the longer you look.
