Here's an invitation and program for a performance by Het Haagse Cabaret van het COC. It's a paper document, part of a larger book, made sometime in the mid-twentieth century, probably using a typewriter and some kind of printing process. I'm drawn to the directness of the text, the way the information is presented without any fuss. The typewritten letters have a certain imperfection to them, some are darker than others, some slightly out of alignment. It’s a reminder that artmaking doesn’t always require fancy tools or techniques, sometimes the most powerful statements are made with the simplest means. There’s a raw energy here, an almost childlike sense of freedom. The different pieces of paper are slightly misaligned. It reminds me of the collages of Kurt Schwitters, or maybe even some of the more politically charged works of Hannah Höch, art that isn't afraid to be messy, to be imperfect, to be human. Art is an ongoing conversation, a dialogue between artists across time and space, each building upon the ideas of those who came before, while also pushing the boundaries of what art can be.
