This is an album containing 191 photographs from a trip to and through South Africa, created by various makers. Think about what it meant to travel to South Africa, and the complex politics of travel, during the time these photos were taken. Who were these travelers, and what was their relationship to the land and its people? These images, though seemingly neutral, are steeped in the politics of colonialism and cultural exchange. The act of collecting and displaying these photographs raises questions about power, representation, and the gaze. Whose stories are being told, and whose are being left out? The photographs reflect the identity of the travelers, but also the historical and cultural context that shaped their journey. They are a reflection of a society grappling with issues of race, class, and cultural identity.
