This is Robert Frank's photographic contact sheet of the Twentieth Century Fox film studio in Burbank, California, made with film, naturally. What strikes me is how Frank presents the film-making process itself as the subject, laying bare the means of production. The textures and tones are so rich, black and white with these halations of light. The way the images are arranged on the sheet, it's like a map of the scene. The individual frames each offer a slightly different perspective, giving you this fractured, Cubist view of the whole process. My eye is drawn to the frame marked with the red square. It highlights the behind-the-scenes nature of movie making. Frank's work, much like that of Walker Evans, highlights the often overlooked aspects of American life. And just as Andy Warhol embraced the silkscreen as a means of exposing the mechanics of image production, Frank embraces the rawness of film to capture a moment.
