This textile bag, made by an anonymous artist, is a real visual treat, full of colour and pattern. It looks like it was made with love. I'm struck by the energy of the design - it's so busy, it's almost chaotic. The artist has used bright red, green and ochre, creating a dynamic contrast. I am drawn to the texture of the piece. It's so tactile! The embroidery looks hand-stitched, giving it an intimate feel. The tassels add a playful element. There is one little green tassel right in the centre that is particularly charming. It contrasts with the red, and creates a focal point. This piece makes me think of Gee’s Bend quilters. These artists also embrace bold colours and improvisational designs. The similarities highlight how art-making is a conversation across time, as artists borrow and reinterpret ideas. The bag’s beauty lies in its imperfections, its willingness to embrace irregularity, and it reminds us that fixed meanings are overrated!
