Jan Brandes created this ink sketch, titled "Zeeschets", as a page in one of his travel journals. The linear representation of ships and what appears to be a harbor immediately calls to mind humanity's eternal fascination with the sea. Think of the Ancient Greek depictions of naval battles on pottery, or even the mythical voyages of exploration in Homer's Odyssey. This motif is mirrored through time in countless depictions of ships navigating the waters. Brandes' sketch is a continuation of a collective, subconscious desire to explore, conquer, and understand the maritime world. The act of sketching—capturing a fleeting moment—becomes, in itself, a symbol of our constant pursuit to grasp the ungraspable, to bring order to the chaos of existence. Consider how these themes resurface time and again, each age reinterpreting them through its own lens.
