"Landskab ved Isefjord" (Landscape by Isefjord) was created by H. Gerner Lund, sometime around the turn of the 20th century. Lund's delicate approach to landscape offers us a window into the cultural values of his time. During this period, the Danish art scene was deeply engaged with questions of national identity, often looking to the natural landscape as a source of cultural pride and belonging. Lund, like many of his contemporaries, romanticizes the Danish countryside, presenting an idealized view of rural life. But we might also ask, whose stories are missing from this idyllic scene? Where are the signs of labor, of the working class who toiled in these fields? Lund’s detailed etching invites us to consider not only what is shown, but also what is conspicuously absent. "Landskab ved Isefjord" prompts us to reflect on the complex relationship between landscape, identity, and the politics of representation.
