This drawing of facades behind tree branches was created by George Hendrik Breitner. Breitner was a Dutch painter and photographer who lived from 1857 to 1923. Breitner, a contemporary of Vincent van Gogh, depicted the changing cityscapes and working-class life of Amsterdam. Unlike the idealized landscapes of earlier Dutch masters, Breitner focused on the gritty realities of urban existence. His art captures the dynamism of a city undergoing rapid industrialization. The loose, sketch-like quality of his drawings reflects the fleeting nature of modern life. It is a glimpse into a world that was quickly disappearing, a world where the old and the new collided. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist’s perception of space and his relationship with the society around him. Breitner once said "I see beauty in the everyday, in the ordinary, in the things that others overlook".
