Niccolò della Casa created this print, “Angels Carrying the Cross with Saints below,” around 1543, and it is currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Notice how the composition is segmented, yet unified by a tonal harmony of grays that lend a dreamlike atmosphere to the scene. The upper section, teeming with muscular angels bearing the cross, contrasts with the lower section of huddled saints. The angels are drawn with dynamic line work to emphasize their physical exertion, whereas the saints below have a more grounded, static quality. The composition utilizes a visual semiotic system of signs. The cross, prominently displayed, symbolizes sacrifice. The angels may represent divine messengers, and the saints signify the faithful. How might this segmented composition challenge fixed meanings? Perhaps it reflects Renaissance interests in humanism, where divine and earthly realms intersect. It invites us to consider the symbolic language and its historical context.
