Hans Thoma created this drawing of a knight in full armor with graphite pencil and white chalk on paper. The choice of humble materials, pencil and chalk, contrasts sharply with the grandeur of the subject, an armored knight. The use of graphite, a material mined from the earth, brings an immediate association with labor. Chalk, in turn, is processed and refined. The texture of the paper also plays a role, adding depth to the knight’s figure through subtle tonal variations, that evoke the texture and weight of his armor. Thoma skillfully uses these materials to give the knight’s armor a metallic quality. What is especially interesting is the implicit social commentary. Knights, who were once symbols of power and chivalry, are reduced to a simple drawing. With this work, Thoma invites us to think about the value of materials, making, and context, breaking down traditional hierarchies between fine art and craft.
