This small, silver gelatin print titled 'Prins Bernhard op rondreis' was made by Anefo and is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum. Look at how the grayscale tones create a soft, almost dreamlike quality. It’s like the whole scene is happening behind a veil, which, as a painter, I find really appealing. The texture of the print itself is smooth, but the image captures so much energy. There's a group of people, all clustered together, smiling, clapping. You can almost hear the sound of their joy! Look at the woman in the center, her face crinkled with laughter as she claps, she stands out in the crowd. It reminds me of some of the photographs that artists like Richter used to make his paintings, where he would almost purposefully obscure detail to concentrate on tone and gesture, reducing the whole to a blur of movement. It shows how a fleeting moment can be transformed into something timeless, something that continues to resonate long after the moment has passed.
