Lucas Vorsterman I created this engraving, Portrait of Isabella d'Este, in the 17th century. Though Vorsterman created this print much later, Isabella d'Este lived during the Italian Renaissance, a period where women of noble birth were expected to be educated, cultured, and influential figures, like Isabella. In this print we see Isabella adorned in luxurious fabrics and elaborate hairstyle. It is a representation of power and status, but it also hints at the complex negotiation women had to make between public duty and personal identity. What does it mean to be a woman in power? The gaze of Isabella invites us to consider the expectations placed upon women in positions of authority, both then and now. This portrait is more than an image; it is a reflection on the ongoing dialogue between gender, power, and representation.
