How are these figures represented, and what is the gaze being invited? Consider the period: World War I raged, and simultaneously women's roles in society were rapidly evolving. How do these contexts speak to you through this artwork? Editor: Well, it's interesting you point that out. The models look… very natural, not idealized, but their direct gaze and comfortable pose almost challenges the traditional male gaze of nudes in art. Could this piece be seen as empowering, subtly reflecting those shifting gender roles? Curator: Precisely! It's tempting to label this simply as an etching in the impressionist style. However, by acknowledging the period’s tensions and power dynamics, we unlock further dialogue. Zorn challenges the very nature of who is observed and how—by women no longer exclusively subjected to someone else's idea. Even the title "My Models" positions the subjects, in their gaze and postures, within that evolving social conversation. Where do we find their agency?
