Kent Monkman made this painting, "Welcoming the Newcomers," with what looks like oil on canvas, judging by the luminosity and blending. The colors are so vibrant: the deep greens of the land, the pale skin of the newcomers and the red cloth really stand out. I can imagine Monkman building up the layers, making constant adjustments. Looking at the figures half-drowning and being pulled to safety, I wonder, what was Monkman thinking about as he built up this composition? What does it mean to “welcome” someone? The way the figures are intertwined makes me think about the constant conversation happening between artists across time. The drama of the sky reminds me of baroque painting, like something by Rubens or Poussin. It’s like Monkman is saying, “Hey, let’s talk about history, bodies, and power, but let’s do it with a wink.” Ultimately, a painting like this becomes a site of inquiry for both the artist and us, the viewers. It invites us to question what we think we know and be open to new interpretations.
